How to Choose a Therapist

How Do You Choose the Right Therapist?

Knowing how to choose the right therapist is really important as it has a huge bearing on a successful therapy experience. In this article, I will help you consider this and other important questions.

  • How do I choose the right therapy for me?
  • Which therapy works the best?

The Therapeutic Relationship

Choosing the right therapist for you is one of the biggest factors in helping you get over your problem. It is really important that you like your therapist and that you feel comfortable with them. It’s important that you believe they can help you and that you feel you trust them. This is all part of the therapeutic relationship.

I would recommend you speak to the therapist on the phone, or better still have a video call with them. This allows you to get to know them a bit. Sometimes the smallest, yet intangible detail makes all the difference. A large part of your success is dependent on the relationship you build together, so it’s important that you like them at the beginning. Doing your research by reading and and having conversations will help you with choosing the right therapist.

Is This the Right Therapy for Me?

Often people aren’t sure about which type of therapy will work best for them. I would say – ask for recommendations, read reviews, look at websites – meaning do your research. But ultimately, I believe so much of the positive work comes from the therapeutic relationship: you like them as a person, you have a feeling that you trust them, and that you believe in their ability to support you through the process.

There are countless types of talking therapy out there, and as a Quest trained Cognitive Hypnotherapist and NLP Master Practitioner I am adept at using a number therapies. The thing is, lots of different therapies could help you get to where you want to go. I would say follow your gut instinct to help you decide which one would suit you.

Which Therapy Works the Best?

Making changes through therapy is a process; it takes time and it’s not linear. It’s very hard to predict how you will feel at the end the sessions. It’s very personal and depends on each person what they think they have gained. That’s why I can’t give any guarantees. There are a number of factors which determine how successful the therapy work you do together will be.

When I take on a client I explain this the best I can. Ultimately they have to make a judgement and trust is involved. I am most comfortable taking on a new client who is positive in that they trust that it could work. This is why I love to work with people who believe it can work Those are usually the people who get amazing results.

Progress in Therapy Sessions

As I said, going through this process is not linear. Often there is a speedy improvement towards the beginning of the sessions, a period of maintenance of new behaviours, and then we are fine tuning towards the end. At other times it might be slow to start with. This sometimes happens when the client’s unconscious mind doesn’t quite trust me yet… and then BANG! There’s a breakthrough!

There is no way to predict how the changes will take place, although I do know, that if you are willing to turn up and try your best, big magical changes can take place!

I also know that if you do nothing, it’s likely nothing will change.

Making Contact

In order to choose the right therapist to help you, you have to take the steps and book that call. Search online or through recommendations, read reviews and trust your gut. Send that email or pick up the phone. That is your first step to finding the perfect match with the right therapist who can help you get from where you are to where you want to be.
