Most of the clients I work with experience some sort of anxiety related to their issue that they want to solve. Naturally, they are wishing to reduce those feelings of anxiety when they come to see a hypnotherapist. In some cases though, the client is experiencing a generalised anxiety; one which encroaches on many areas of their life. This type of anxiety can make everyday activities that they once took for granted, become difficult and sometimes unbearable. These feelings can begin at any time, and sometimes the cause isn’t very obvious. The good news is though, that this is one of the issues I can help with. Just as the mind has ‘learned’ this new way of behaving, it can ‘unlearn’ it, and I can work with you to get under the bonnet and help you to reduce and relieve these symptoms. Sometimes it is possible and useful to understand where the problem stemmed from, and I can then help the client to make positive changes in the way they have stored a memory in their mind, for example.
Most of the therapy work I do for anxiety is done conversationally, so I will ask lots of questions to understand how the anxiety shows itself, when and where it happens and when it began. Then together we discuss what you would like instead. And rather than saying ‘I don’t want to feel…’ I encourage you to say what you do want to experience and feel. Most clients report a change in the way they feel straight after the first session, and my trainer Trevor Silvester of The Quest Institute says ‘most therapy happens between sessions’. I give each of my clients a hypnotherapy download to listen to, which has been written specifically for them, and I often ask clients to complete a series of tasks or ‘homework’ which embeds new habits and ways of thinking. The download works at an unconscious level, as I suggest you listen to it as you fall asleep each night. The tasks or homework work at a more cognitive level which helps you start to notice the different choices and behaviours you are beginning to make.
Once the initial anxiety begins to diminish, clients often feel a sense of freedom about decisions they would previously have found difficult.
