Speaking with Confidence
Lots of people want to speak more confidently about themselves, especially when speaking to new people. Speaking with confidence can really help you to show the world who you are, what you stand for and what is important to you. However, it is a skill that many of us struggle to grasp. Sometimes talking about yourself can be seen as bragging, rather than simply communicating with others about who you are. This varies across cultures, and even within families and personality types. In the UK in particular, we can be reserved when it comes to speaking to new people. However, in the world of business, or even at the school gates speaking with confidence becomes an invaluable skill.
Expressing Yourself Confidently
Speaking about yourself with confidence is valuable in different areas of your life. Most people are interested in learning about other people. So whether you are at a job interview or are meeting people socially, speaking with confidence is invaluable. People who speak confidently engender confidence in the listener. Your confidence makes it sound like you believe what you are saying. Conversely, if you sound unsure, it doesn’t seem as though you are speaking confidently. This can make it harder for people to trust your what you’re saying.
Speaking Confidently at Work
Being a self-employed therapist means that I do a lot of my own marketing, writing copy and posting on social media. This has helped me become more confident speaking about what I do and how I can help others. This relates to speaking confidently in both the written and the spoken word.
The more often I talk about my work, and express who I am, the clearer I become about my mission and my values.
It has been a steep learning curve, but do you know what? The more that I do it, the better I get! It’s like everything we do. We just get better at it each time we have another go. And that is the same with speaking to new people. In my job I speak to new people all of the time, in order to express who I am and how I can help them with cognitive hypnotherapy.
Connecting with Others by Speaking Confidently
When you speak with confidence, you make it easier for others to feel comfortable with you. That in turn, means that they can connect with you.
People like people like them. You don’t have to be the same to connect, but finding some commonality helps. This can be very unconscious, and may be hard to pinpoint.
