What is Hypnosis?
This is the questions I am asked most regularly: What is hypnosis? I will show you that hypnosis is a natural, every day state.
Hypnosis is a state of trance. We all go in and out of trance, a few times a day and it is a natural state of being.
Hypnosis can feel like day dreaming or thinking about something else, while other things are going on. For example, when your unconscious mind is driving the car, while you are thinking of your to-do list. You do many things on auto-pilot everyday, which allows your mind to go into trance. This is a natural state and we go in and out of it, several times a day.
What Does Hypnosis Feel Like?
When you are hypnotised, it makes you feel very relaxed. You can feel like you are in a trance. Have you ever been so absorbed in a book or a film that you don’t notice anything else? You may have almost missed your train stop because you were so engrossed in what you were reading. You are in a kind of hypnotic trance when you are talking to a friend, or watching a film. Being in a hypnotic trance for therapy is a similar experience.
Think back to the last time you were really engaged in a conversation. Even though there were other people around, you might have been so engaged, that you did not notice them. You were absorbed in your conversation. Similarly, think back to a time when you watched a film that you really enjoyed. Maybe you were entranced by the characters, or cared a lot about them. You might have felt some strong emotions, because you were invested in what was going on. If someone walked in or out of the room, you wouldn’t have paid much attention.
All of these are examples of trance – a natural state that we go in and out of every day. It is what allows us to focus and engage in what we are doing. It can be a highly enjoyable experience – just t=like hypnosis.
How Does Hypnosis Work?
Hypnosis works when we become absorbed in our thoughts – which might be because of something we are watching or doing. Playing a sport or a game can take our mind off our everyday worries, and a trance induced by a hypnotherapist works in the same way.
As a hypnotherapist, I induce trance in my clients by speaking in a calm, relaxing tone of voice. I guide my clients into a relaxed state where they can let their conscious mind drift off. Then I can say helpful words and phrases to encourage the unconscious mind to create subtle changes. Each time a person listens to my hypnotherapy recording, their mind opens up a bit more and the changes start to take place.
Hypnosis encourages your unconscious mind to think differently and this changes your behaviour. This is turn helps you think, feel and behave in a different and more positive way. You can leave your bad feelings, habits and issues behind and move forward with confidence and joy!
