
What are Affirmations?
Affirmations are positive phrases stated in the present tense. They often start with ‘I am…’. They are designed to be spoken aloud, whispered or repeated internally. The intention is that the phrases seep into the unconscious mind and change what you believe. When you listen to affirmations over and over again, they become part of what you think naturally. You can increase the effectiveness by repeating the positive phrases that you hear and also by writing them down each day.
How Do Affirmations Work?
Repeating a phrase, using your free will is a conscious choice. Say the phrase enough times, and it will start to change the way you think. This can have a deep impact, over time and improve how you feel about yourself. This is why we should be mindful about what we give our attention to. If you listen to negative phrases being repeated, a part of your unconscious mind can start to pick them up, and believe them. It’s important to choose who and what you listen to and watch, on social media for example, carefully.
Why Self-Esteem Affirmations
Self-esteem affirmations are designed to help you think positive thoughts about yourself. Our self-esteem can become eroded over time, even as very young children. When we start to hear the word ‘no’ as very young children, it can feel that we are being our freedom. Listening to the same messages again and again can compound the meaning of those words. So we need to be mindful of the words we say to ourselves too. How we speak to ourselves, is an important factor in creating high self-esteem.
No babies are born with low self-esteem!
This means that a series of events make us change the way we think about ourselves. This means that we have the power to think positively about ourselves, too.
Self-esteem affirmations are one way to change our thinking and help us focus on the positive. Even though the phrases might not feel true to begin with, over time they can become more comfortable. The more you listen to them, the easier they feel to hear or say.
